Overview

At the Registry of Deeds, documents that relate to real estate (property) ownership are recorded and searched. The purpose of the Registry of Deeds is to record and preserve all land records in Knox County.  Documents are accepted for recording based on Maine State Law, most generally found in Title 33 of the Maine Revised Statutes Annotated.  The Registry is administered by the Registrar of Deeds and is responsible for recording documents as prescribed by these statutes.

Our major purpose is to make available, for all time, the information that proves ownership and interest in every piece of property in Knox County.  Our records date back to 1760, which include the records of Lincoln, Waldo and Hancock Counties before Knox County was incorporated on April 1, 1860.

Documents such as deeds, mortgages, liens, discharges, assignments and certain court documents, just to name a few, are entered into public record in the order they are received.  They are made available to the public through a paper and electronic index.  The Registry is used every day by many individuals; banks, credit bureaus, lawyers, title companies, genealogists and independent researchers.

Documents can be searched in person at the Registry from 1760 to present.  Our online web search  has document records from 1760 to present and survey plans from 1800 to present.   You will need to create an account if you wish to print documents.  A link to our website, Maine Registry of Deeds, is on the left sidebar for your convenience.
