Prescription Drug Discount Program

Please note due to changes in this program we no longer receive regular savings update info or other program stats. We understand the program is continuing as a NACo affinity program and residents report card usage is still accepted at local pharmacies.  If you are a card holder consider using the card on your next Rx purchase.   Info below is dated but retained for your convenience.  We will delete or update weblinks as new info becomes available.

Program year 2020 showed a small savings when the discount was given!  This amounted to an average of 21.6% savings over retail.  Since the program began in 2008 about 50% of prescription attempts have resulted in a discount.

Please consider presenting your Knox County Rx Discount card each time you have a prescription filled.  It may provide some discount benefit to you regardless of your current health insurance coverage.

Since 2008, The Knox County Prescription Drug Discount program, provided through the county affiliation with the National Association of Counties (NACo) and their "Live Healthy" initiative, has saved Knox County residents over $154,053* on their Rx needs. (*as of  March,2021)

The program is available free of charge to any Knox County resident without regard to income or existing health insurance or medical condition.

To use the card, simply present it along with your usual insurance cards or whatever else you may use.  If the card can provide a discount or increase an existing discount, it will; on the spot!  The card itself is not insurance, and the discount may not work for everyone, but about half of every attempt to use the card resulted in a discount.  Since the program started, the savings for each allowed discount has averaged $18.36**.  That amounts to an average savings of 29.1%**.  The program has provided over  5,500 successful discounts to Knox County residents program utilizers. (**Stats updated as provided by NACo)

There are many ways and places to get a card.  The easiest is online through the NACo/Caremark website.  Click here to access that page. You can immediately print a card from the site for use today!  No waiting or special enrollment! The cards have also been provided to each Knox County town office or city hall.  Most area libraries also have a stock on hand as do many area health care providers.  If you would like to have a card mailed to you, simply call the EMA office at 594-5155 and we’ll be glad to drop one in the mail for you (along with a few extra’s for neighbors and family).

If you have a “special needs pet”, the card may also work for its prescription pet medications. Meds provided directly through your vet probably won’t result in a discount, but we’re told those filled at “people pharmacies” may.

The following pharmacies in the Knox County area participate in the program:  Hannafords, Shaws, WalMart,  all Walgreens locations, Kennebec Pharmacy & Home Care in Rockport and the Pen Bay Medical Center.
